CHAPTER SIX

‘HEATH says that he’s just taking me to lunch in Leeds, but I’m sure I can persuade him to do a little shopping too.’

Isobel smiled like the Cheshire cat that had just been presented with a particularly delicious bowl of cream as she announced her plans.

‘And get him to spend an inordinate amount of money on me.’

Her smile was wide and bright and she waggled her eyebrows with exaggerated enthusiasm.

‘I mean—he’s seriously loaded, isn’t he?’

Kat managed to make some non-committal murmur that Isobel could take for agreement if she wanted to. She had had enough of the way that her sister-in-law flaunted her fascination with Heath in her face and she was quite frankly tired of hearing just how much his obvious wealth was an important part of his appeal.

‘Belle, are you sure that you’re being sensible?’

‘Sensible?’ her sister-in-law laughed. ‘Sensible is for old fogeys like you. I’m only twenty and I want to have some fun.’

‘And you think that’s what Heath wants too?’ ‘Of course!’

Isobel rolled her eyes in exasperation at Kat’s tone, shaking her head so that her blonde hair swung out around her face.

‘If I could just get him to see that I’m the person he wants to have fun with.’

‘But are you sure you know what you’re doing? Like you say, Heath isn’t the sort of man you’re used to. He’s so much older than you and he’s …’

Dangerous was the word that sprang to mind. Threatening. Hidden. Enigmatic. She knew that if Isobel challenged her she would be hard put to explain those feelings. To her sister-in-law he was charm itself.

Lethal was another. But that meant lethal to her sense of equilibrium. Lethal to her peace of mind. Just being in the same room as him knocked her right off balance and had the world hazing round her.

‘Oh, I grant you there’s a real age gap. He is pretty old,’ Isobel said, with blithe disregard for that fact that at barely thirty Heath was a man very much in his prime. ‘But he is really hot—hot!’

She fanned a hand in front of her face as if trying to cool herself down.

‘And he’s all man!’

‘Are you saying …?’

Kat caught herself up sharply, shocked at the way that she had jumped on Isobel’s words. She was appalled that it mattered to her so much.

‘Oh, we haven’t even kissed yet!’ Isobel laughed. ‘Though it’s not for want of trying—on my part anyway! Do you know, if it wasn’t for the fact that he’s so blatantly hetero, I might actually have worried that he was gay. But he isn’t—he just couldn’t be.’

Unconsciously Kat’s hand slipped up to touch on her mouth, tracing the line of her lips, the soft flesh that had once been crushed so fiercely by Heath’s kiss. Remembering that moment and the hard, hot evidence of the fact that he had been so strongly aroused, she could be in no doubt at all that Heath was as straight as they came. It was shocking to
